Mixed-use Development and Private Hospital, Berkshire, UK
Innovative design for a mixed-use development and private hospital, Berkshire, UK
An exciting opportunity to design the gardens and landscape for a mixed-use development and an attached private hospital. The mixed-use development comprises a restaurant, a chill-out zone, apartments and office spaces. Each office is equipped with its own mini-garden, and a share of the communal gardens, which also form part of the private hospital gardens. A walled garden with abundant planting is the perfect spot for private contemplation, one-on-one patient-doctor appointments, while a communal circular lawn, seating and covered seating provide an open space for events and other marketing purposes. Each mini private garden of this mixed use development is planted with low-maintenance, easy-to-care-for plants, while porous clay pavers create a private area and define the spaces. Resin-bound aggregate pathways lead you around the garden, passing a living wall by the main entrance to the property, and swings round towards an unusual woodland walk with pathways and lawns in an innovative design, which draws you through the space to a communal vegetable garden and greenhouse. The private hospital has rooms on the ground floor with doors that open onto private smaller gardens, again defined by the use of porous clay pavers. Aluminium angle edging creates crisp outlines for a modern, contemporary feel. Wide, level pathways, with low threshold doorways, accessible raised beds and tables, and spaces for wheelchairs, beds, pushchairs, etc create a fully inclusive design, accessible to all.
