School garden for St Nicholas Special School in Canterbury, Kent, UK
A sensory school garden with fishing pond, growing area and a place to reflect
An unloved area of the school is turned into a sensory school garden. A large greenhouse, restored and repainted, sits at the entrance to the garden. A new growing area, fully accessible to all students, with raised beds and growing tables make this space the perfect school garden for outdoor learning. A central fish pond and a feature apple tree create pathways that circulate the garden. A raised border to the south is planted with herbaceous perennials and climbing plants left to scramble along the ground and cascade over the edges, softening the treated sleeper ‘walls’.
A hidden circular paved area with benches is the perfect spot for one-on-one sessions, time out or simply a place to read a book quietly or reflect on the day.
The large greenhouse acts also as an outdoor classroom and is fully accessible.
