Naturalistic garden with a series of ‘rooms’, swimming pool with very large naturalistic borders, for a large property set within its own orchard

Naturalistic garden and naturalistic planting is all about creating swathes of plants, with the use of ornamental grasses and plants close to the species type found in the area. Set within an acre garden, a very long and very deep border (25m long x 10m deep) is created to stretch the length of a swimming pool in an informal naturalistic style. Behind the long border are open fields, so many of the plants selected are in colours that match the natural countryside, making the garden feel even bigger. The border continues towards an open lawn area with a pathway between, to a contemporary pergola used for espaliered soft fruits. On top of the pergola are modern photovoltaic cells that generate electricity for the household. The cells also create a ‘covered’ walkway, especially useful when it rains. The planting blends seamlessly with the valley and farmland behind, and adds interest for 12 months of the year. Colours from the horizon are brought into the garden planting to create a natural link with the surrounding environment.
