Modern garden design for a ‘contemplation garden’ with a minimal and contemporary look for a thatched, Grade II listed barn
Modern garden design for a new area adjoining a Grade II listed thatched barn. Working alongside the teams from B&Q and the publishers Thames & Hudson, there is a sizeable lawn, with a pergola to act as a covered walkway and to block the view of the secluded garden – ‘the feeling of space withholds its secrets until you step right inside’. Clematis, roses and honeysuckle festoon the pergola. At a later date a ‘twisted’ granite water feature was added, as well as Yorkstone paving under the pergola. Beneath the twisted granite water feature is a live water well, so this source was used to create the effect. On the opposite side of the lawn is the sunken deck that complements the theme of escape and contemplation. An additional water feature in this space makes it the perfect spot for morning yoga. Planting is muted, abundant so as not to be too distracting. The modern garden design and the plant selection reflect the natural surroundings giving the area a real sense of place and space. The lawn is also the perfect size for a marquee for entertaining. Lighting adds another element to the modern garden design and a simple bench made from sleepers give the crisp edge to any modern theme.
