Outdoor Fireplace and Kitchen with Areas to Showcase Sculpture, and to Sit Alongside a Stunning Architectural House, Nottinghamshire, UK

A large garden on multiple levels and in an L-shape created wonderful design elements such as terracing, a sunken area surrounded by high walls with an outdoor fireplace, kitchen and living room. This area then steps up to the formal lawn area with a quadrant containing two lawns and two large borders. Pleached hornbeam trees and hornbeam hedging create a soft enclosure, while the Heptacodium trees add interest and colour. The colour palette for plants is kept to a minimum of red, orange, white and green. At one end of the resin-bound aggregate pathways is a glass water feature with a bench below – the perfect spot to sit and read a book. The main focus point from the outdoor fireplace and kitchen area is a large piece of sculpture created by the owner of the property. A small flight of floating steps lead to a generous patio finished with marble paving. The same paving is used inside to create a harmonious effect. Very large expanses of windows create a dramatic backdrop to the garden. An additional seating area on the patio is the perfect spot for a morning coffee.

As the day progresses, the outdoor living room entices you to spend time on the comfy armchairs in front of the fireplace. The adjacent kitchen allows for the whole family to spend time in this area, even on a cold winter’s day. The warmth from the fireplace adds a glow to the area at night. The large cast-iron railings that form the roof of the outdoor living room create dramatic shadows as the sun passes throughout the day.

The whole garden is built with warm tones, echoed in the use of the marble, the granite walls, the pathway aggregate, the soft furnishings and the antique metal of the reflective basin with waterlilies and lanterns in the sunken zone. The green lawns help balance the scheme. An otherwise awkward L-shaped sloped garden has been turned into a middle-Eastern paradise.
