Modern London Garden, W2, UK
A modern London garden for a basement flat with a ‘South of France’ twist, rear courtyard and front entrance
A modern London garden with a South of France twist for a basement property, to reflect where the Client, who is in fashion and cosmetics, was born. The garden comprises the entrance and rear courtyard. Soft verdant planting with very little colour dominates the design, while antique table and chairs sourced through online antique dealers sit upon a rustic sandstone paved area in a modern design, creates a completely different mood and feel to the very contemporary interior of the property. A living green wall transforms the bland white wall, which is visible from the kitchen and living room, while subtle lighting creates warmth and a cosy space to entertain. A French plancha grille finishes off the design. Additional string lights add to the party vibe.
The front entrance is reached via a black wrought iron curved staircase with currently no planting, except for an old Wisteria sinensis. A large metal cupboard under the stairs is turned into a useable space, while an awkward alcove becomes a false light well to add more light to the basement area, with Azulejo tiles and lots of shade-loving plants. A canopy covers guests as they stand outside the front door and the staircase is softened with wood. Over-sized planters filled with shade-loving plants welcome you to the door.
